Reasons for needing homeowner’s insurance:

Owners:  Protects your house and personal property
Renters:  Protects your furniture and personal property
Everybody:  Protects against liability, i.e. accidents which injure other people/property.

When insuring your home, you should insure it for the full amount it would cost to rebuild if it got destroyed.  You can insure the structure of your home three different ways.

Replacement Cost – The cost of replacing the property, no depreciation deductions, and limited to a maximum amount.

Guaranteed Replacement Cost:  The same as replacement cost, but without a dollar limit.  Not available in all states.

Actual Cash Value:  An amount equal to the replacement value of the damaged property, minus an allowance for depreciation.  If the policy doesn’t state your property is covered for replacement value, the coverage is only for cash value.

To estimate how much it would cost to rebuild your home multiply local building costs per square foot by the total square footage of your home.  You may have to consult your local builder’s association or a real estate appraiser to ascertain this information.

Make sure you check the value of your homeowner’s insurance policy each year against rising local building costs.  You can also add an Inflation Guard Clause to your policy.

Cheap Pet Insurance

Cheap Pet Insurance

Cheap pet insurance is not always the best pet insurance, but the coverage could save your pets life.  Not long ago, our puppy injured his leg and cost us well over $2,000.   You can read about it here.  If we had been financially strapped, we would have had to put our beloved puppy down or simply let him suffer without the use of his back hind leg.  In the end, we paid for his surgery and he is a healthy dog nearing 4 years old.

If you are like most people,  an unexpected bill of $2,000 is not easy to cough up.   If your pet suddenly becomes sick, you can expect an emergency visit to be around $200.00 and that is just the beginning of the financial nightmare should she need any special care or services.

Just like everything else in life, you typically get what you pay for.  That is why you need to thoroughly research pet insurance before purchasing a cheap pet insurance policy.

Important things to consider

  1.  Does the pet insurance company have a good Reputation?  Check them out on the BBB website.  Do some digging and try to find honest reviews.

  1. Is your pet eligible?   Some companies may not cover certain breeds, and most will not cover pre-existing conditions.   Also, keep in mind that the age of your pet will certainly be a factor.

  1. Can I continue using my own Vet and are regular visits covered?

  1. What is the deductible for Vet Visits and Emergency Visits.  This is obviously a big factor on your plan coverage.  You can get cheaper rates by setting a higher deductible.  The important thing is to make sure you can pay whatever deductible you set.

  1. How are claims handled?  Do they have good customer service or do they make you jump through hoops.  How about hours of operation?

There are more details we could discus about finding a cheap pet insurance company, but these are the most important.    You should really check around and use these questions as a guide.

With any luck, you’ll find a company with great coverage and affordable rates.  Wishing you all the best.

Sincerely,

Ryan Sawyer

Why Buy Pet Insurance

Pet Insurance

I should have, could have, would have bought pet insurance had I known.    I could have saved thousands on vet bills in just a matter of a couple years.

Please allow me to share my story of not buying pet insurance.  I promise to keep it brief.

We purchased a puppy and named him Winston from the pet shop for around $900.00 which is expensive for a pet.  I still don’t know what I was thinking but the kids really liked him and my wife had always wanted a puppy.

The pet store offered pet insurance, but after dishing out 900.00 I declined.   This was a big mistake!

Not more than 2 months after we got Winston, he tried to jump into our above ground pool and his leg got caught in the latter.   After taking him to our local vet, we were directed to the emergency vet 30 minutes away.  It cost me $180.00 just for seeing the regular vet and getting a referral.   Outrageous!   On top of that, you have to pay for an emergency pet visit.  Ouch!

So what happened with our Puppy is he tore his tendon from his knee and he could no longer bend his right hind leg.   Surgery would be nearly 2,000 and they offered no guarantee that he would fully recover.   That’s a lot of money to spend on a dog without any guarantees.

Without surgery, he wouldn’t have a chance at a normal life.  We would have had to change his name to gimpy or put him down.   Because this was our first new family pet, we opted for the surgery and I am happy to say he made a full recovery.
