Pet Insurance
I should have, could have, would have bought pet insurance had I known. I could have saved thousands on vet bills in just a matter of a couple years.
Please allow me to share my story of not buying pet insurance. I promise to keep it brief.
We purchased a puppy and named him Winston from the pet shop for around $900.00 which is expensive for a pet. I still don’t know what I was thinking but the kids really liked him and my wife had always wanted a puppy.
The pet store offered pet insurance, but after dishing out 900.00 I declined. This was a big mistake!
Not more than 2 months after we got Winston, he tried to jump into our above ground pool and his leg got caught in the latter. After taking him to our local vet, we were directed to the emergency vet 30 minutes away. It cost me $180.00 just for seeing the regular vet and getting a referral. Outrageous! On top of that, you have to pay for an emergency pet visit. Ouch!
So what happened with our Puppy is he tore his tendon from his knee and he could no longer bend his right hind leg. Surgery would be nearly 2,000 and they offered no guarantee that he would fully recover. That’s a lot of money to spend on a dog without any guarantees.
Without surgery, he wouldn’t have a chance at a normal life. We would have had to change his name to gimpy or put him down. Because this was our first new family pet, we opted for the surgery and I am happy to say he made a full recovery.
